When I first told people I was going to Iceland, I had a lot of different reactions. About half the people were really excited for me and knew enough about Iceland to know it’s truly one of the most beautiful places in the world, while the other half kept asking me how cold it was going to be and how it was silly of me to go on a trip when I was already abroad for 10 months (le sigh…)
But anyway, let me just tell you, Iceland was 100% one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been to in my life. The trip was expensive, BUT it was worth every penny.
During our trip to New York City, my throat started killing me. Sorry for the TMI, but whenever I looked in the mirror, it was very swollen. On the plane I checked it again and there were WHITE SPOTS in the back of my throat (omg!) On the plane Lisa and I decided I would stop by the doctors because we were heading on a roadtrip and there would be limited access to seeing a doctor.
Right after we got to our Air BnB, I headed out to find the ER. I got a litttttle lost and a nice woman helped me call a cab (that cost me $15 and literally took 4 minutes. Hi, Iceland). Long story short, after spending a few hours in the ER, it was deemed NOTHING was wrong with me, and I was told because I’m a foreigner, I had to pay the full cost. Which was $330. Although I didn’t cry, I felt like I could. Learn from me: If I would have just gone to the Minute Clinic in NYC, I would have saved time and money. Oh well, what can you do?
After the drama of the ER visit, Lisa and I met up with Nate and Jeff, who will formally be known as “the guys” for the rest of the trip. Nate is my coworker and friend from Shanghai, and when he let me know him and his friend would be in Iceland overlapping the time of our trip, I was excited to spend time with them! We decided to rent a car to do the south part of the coast together and it was an awesome decision. It’s a really good idea to have our own car because we were able to take our time and see what we wanted to see.
The Golden Circle is a very famous part of Iceland that most people do as part of their trip. It starts in Reykjavik (the capital, and where we were staying), and loops around for about 300km. The main sites you hit are Pingvillr National Park, the Gulfoss Waterfall, and the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. The Golden Circle is one of those must-do items in Iceland and I’m really glad we did it!
Iceland is famous for having a lot of hidden water hot spots to go into, but we decided to go to the lesser known Secret Lagoon. You guys, it was gorgeous. We had so much fun enjoying the natural hot water and enjoying a cold beer in the hot water 😉
Another thing that was really fun about our road trip was just being able to spend time together (cheesy, I know) and talk about our shared mutual love of travel. I appreciated getting to know my coworker better outside of work too, which has made this school year even more fun.
Late night cabin dinners and conversations! (It was after midnight when this picture was taken but it was still light out! Look out the window!)
Iceland is such a beautiful place!! Look at that #nofilter sunset!
I will be back to see the Northern Lights, that’s a promise!
Be sure to tune into part two next week!
