One thing that I’m very, very good at is putting my foot in my mouth especially if I’m drinking. Sometimes I say things that come out the wrong way, or sound mean, but one thing I can say with certainty is that I am a nice person who would never say anything mean to anybody (to their face. Yes, sometimes sister has got to vent!)
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the power of words. Obviously, I like to write, (I mean hello!) and writing is a good way for me to process what I am thinking. I want what I say and write to leave people feeling positive and happy.
Since it’s my blog and I write what I want, I gotta share with you a text I just received (I don’t schedule my posts so this shiz is live) It’s from a guy I kind of dated over the summer and we have tried to be friends (don’t ask me why…) This was literally the text he sent me:
“You are a little crazy, a little high maintenance, and a lot emotional. It’s really hard to deal with.”
Excuse me, who asked your opinion?
So now, as I’m sitting in a puddle of feeling sorry for myself, I have to hope that I have never made anyone feel the way I’m feeling now. Because words, friends, are powerful. They can make you feel good, bad, and everything in between. I pride myself in choosing my words carefully. No, I’m not perfect, but I’m fairly certain that I’ve never said something to someone with the intent to hurt their feelings.
I was talking with a friend about how something I feel taken advantage of because I’m nice (we’ve all feel like that, yes?) and he reminded me of something: it’s much better to be a nice person who sometimes gets taken advantage of than someone who is mean and people don’t like and really just isn’t happy.
Has someone ever hurt your feelings by the words they used?
PS- my blogging bestie Melissa wrote an amazing, amazing post today about the struggle with depression. I’m fairly open about my struggles on the blog, but I sometimes don’t know how to say it. I think she totally hit the nail on the head for what it can really feel like. Check it out here.
