Oh my goodness. Today marks an important milestone in my life (yes, it’s that serious).
Today, I’ve officially been blogging for FIVE years.
Five years! That’s insane! That’s longer than I’ve had any job, or had any relationship. This blog has brought me so much joy; so many friends, so many connections, a small bit of money, a creative outlet, a community and a space that’s all mine. I am beyond, beyond thankful for this space.
So here are some thoughts on my blogging experience and the last five years.
Bloggers who blog about blogging (say that five times fast) keep commenting on how blogging has changed a lot throughout the years. And it has, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to! I really mean that. You don’t have to take Instagram flat lays or tweet 6 times a day or pin 4 times every hour. You really, honestly don’t have to do that if that’s what you want to do. Or you can do just exactly that if that’s what you want to do. Guys, don’t let anyone tell you what to do with your hobby. You know?
So, so many inspiring, thoughtful, and fun women. Who would have thought I would have met two of my best friends in the entire world on the internet? (Hi Lisa and Becca!) That I would meet girls virtually (but never in real life) who provide me with spiritual support (what’s up Brittany and Juliette!). And all the other fabulous ladies who have become my people over the past five years. You know who you are!
Meeting Kaelene in Iceland this summer!
I do! In a busy, crowded life, I need a space where I can be me. Where I can write about makeup and books and goals and unicorns. Where I can share what’s really on my mind. And I won’t lie; it’s nice to have an online record of the past few years of my life. Although this certainly isn’t my online journal, let’s be honest, it’s pretty close to it!
I’m so glad I have Lisa not only in China, but as my main blogging girl. She just gets me!
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my blogging career is you have to find your tribe. Your squad. Your girls (and maybe boys). Your people. Not only in blogging, but in life. Sometimes I’ll write a post that nobody comments on, or I’ll be tossing around a topic idea, and I’ll need my tribe to tell me what they think. I need their support, love, and encouragement. This is imperative to me.
If you want to start a blog, I really think you should. Just get out there and write. Who cares what the design looks like; just start typing about the things that you care about and the things that matter to you. Every month or so (I’m not kidding! I’m really not!) I’ll get an email or Facebook message from a random friend or acquaintance asking me how to start a blog… that they found it and think it’s awesome and want advice (how flattering!!)
My best advice?: just start it. I promise you won’t regret it.
I’d obviously be silly not to say thank you to you. You beautiful human, wherever you are in the world right now. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read what I have to say. You’re the coolest. xo
